Moorfield Learning Centre and our outreach hubs offer something special for young people who may find traditional educational settings challenging to access. We have a proven track record of success in developing learners' confidence, resilience, and academic achievement.

WELCOME

It is with pleasure that I offer you a warm welcome to Moorfield Learning Centre.

Moorfield is a very special place to study and work. Made up of three centres - our small school, our secondary outreach hub and our primary hub - Moorfield offers a safe, nurturing place for young people to access their education. Our high staff to student ratios mean that we are able to offer a very personalised learning experience for our young people.

We pride ourselves on the positive relationships we build with our learners and on our ability to meet their, sometimes complex, needs. We take a holistic approach to education, recognising that academic progress is just one aspect of a child's development. Our talented and experienced staff work tirelessly to support the overall wellbeing and happiness of our young people, understanding that a child must be emotionally and mentally ready to learn in order to thrive. Whether it's providing regulation time, one-to-one support from a key worker, or even a rejuvenating walk, we do whatever it takes to ensure our learners are in the right mindset to engage with their education. This mindful approach sets Moorfield apart, allowing us to create a nurturing environment where young people can rediscover their love of learning and unlock their full potential.

I am fortunate to work with a knowledgeable and experienced staff team at Moorfield, all of whom endeavour to ensure that every young person receives the support they need to thrive in school and beyond. Our talented staff do an incredible job of supporting young people to re-engage with education and, working from our outreach hubs, the outreach team support young people from local schools to access educational provision, with a view to re-integrating them into their mainstream setting.

Together, we are committed to making every young person’s school experience the best it can possibly be. I feel privileged to be leading the team to shape bright futures for our learners at Moorfield Learning Centre.

Kind Regards,

our vision

At Moorfield Learning Centre, our vision is clear: to provide a safe, positive, and nurturing environment in which young people can grow academically, socially and emotionally. We understand that mainstream school is not the right fit for every student, and we pride ourselves on offering an educational alternative for young people who find the traditional setting challenging.

Our Unique Approach

  • Bespoke Learning: With small numbers, we can offer a personalised learning package for each young person. This tailored approach allows us to support learners in reaching their full academic potential.

  • Holistic Development: Beyond academic success, we are dedicated to nurturing all the skills necessary for learners to lead a well-rounded and independent life. Our focus is on emotional growth, social development, and academic achievement.

Engaging with Our Community

We believe in fostering strong relationships with our community to create a supportive network for our learners. By working collaboratively with parents, local partnerships, and the wider community, we aim to develop cultural capital and promote social, moral, spiritual, and cultural growth in our students.

therapeutic learning

At Moorfield Learning Centre, we understand the importance of holistic development. Through engaging music sessions, creative art projects, and exciting outdoor activities, we aim to provide therapeutic experiences that enhance emotional well-being and promote creative expression. These opportunities allow our learners to explore their interests, develop new skills, and build confidence in a supportive setting.

Join Us in Our Journey

We invite parents, learners, local schools, and the wider community to visit Moorfield Learning Centre for a tour and discussion about what we can offer. Experience first hand our unique approach to education and discover how we can help your child thrive.

Our learning Centres

Moorfield Learning Centre is proud to have three sites in the Barrow area, each offering a unique and enriching educational experience for our learners.

Moorfield Learning Centre

Moorfield Street, Barrow

This site is our main school, although we are not your conventional school! We have intentionally created a setting that does not feel like a traditional school environment. Working closely with young people, we have designed a welcoming, comfortable atmosphere, removing many associations with traditional schooling.

  • Small Settings: Our school is intentionally small, with a maximum of 12 young people on roll.
  • Student-Designed Decor: The décor in our school has been designed by the young people we work with, ensuring a personalised and engaging environment.
  • Inclusive Environment: Instead of classic school desks, we opt for boardroom-style tables to promote engagement and inclusivity.

We believe that by creating a unique and nurturing environment, we can better support the holistic development of our learners.

Moorfield Secondary Outreach

Rawlinson Street, Barrow

For those young people accessing our secondary outreach centre, our overarching aim is to reintegrate them back to mainstream. We liaise closely with learners’ schools to decide upon an education package which is suitable for the needs of the individual.

As well as delivering sessions which focus on literacy and numeracy, we also offer a wide range of learning experiences, designed to promote positive well being and confidence as learners. As much as possible, we engage with local providers to support our young people to find their place in the community.

We group the young people carefully, allowing for 1:1 and small group instruction. By giving careful consideration to our groupings, this allows some of our most reserved and vulnerable young people to flourish and build positive relationships with like-minded peers.

Moorfield Primary Outreach

Schneider Road, Barrow

Our primary outreach centre caters for young people who may find the mainstream primary setting difficult to cope with. Through liaison with the young person's school, we support learners to develop their literacy and numeracy skills.

We take a unique approach to learning at our primary hub by spending a significant amount of time outside the classroom. Through various outdoor activities, we provide a hands-on learning experience that connects students with their local environment.

  • Experiential Learning: We believe in learning by doing, and we provide practical, real-world experiences to enhance academic knowledge.
  • Nature Exploration: Our learners have the opportunity to explore and appreciate the natural world, fostering a sense of environmental awareness.
  • Community Engagement: We actively engage with the local community to instil a sense of social responsibility in our young people.

Meet the team

Our dedicated and skilled staff members are committed to providing a safe, positive, and nurturing environment for our students to grow academically, socially and emotionally. Our staff members are largely based in one setting but work with different learners across various settings throughout the week.

Take A tour

We are always pleased to welcome visitors to our learning centres. Whether you are a parent, a teacher or a member of the local community, please contact the school or outreach hubs if you would like to visit us for a tour. In the meantime, please enjoy our videos below:

ADMISSIONS STATEMENT AND REFErral

At Moorfield Learning Centre, we are committed to providing a safe, positive, and structured environment where young people can grow academically, socially, and emotionally. All children are entitled to a Full-Time Equivalent Education, and we work in partnership with Local Authorities to ensure that young people who may find mainstream school challenging, those affected by EBSA (Emotionally Based School Avoidance), and CME (Children Missing from Education) receive the support they need to fulfil their statutory entitlement.

Admission to the School

Admission to Moorfield Learning Centre is carried out in liaison with the Local Authority and other relevant professionals. We offer full-time places, and learners become part of our school community.
Parents who believe their child would benefit from this provision can contact the school for further information. Additionally, they should contact the Local Authority SEND team and the young person's current educational setting, if applicable.

Admission to the Outreach Centres

We also offer part-time places through our outreach programme for secondary and primary aged learners. Headteachers and SENCOs from schools collaborate with our team to determine the most appropriate provision for each young person. We actively involve families throughout the referral and assessment process.
Current settings are asked to complete a referral form for the young person and, from receipt of this, we aim to start the placement within five days. A risk assessment will be requested from the young person's current educational provision.

For more information on admissions or to discuss how Moorfield Learning Centre can support your child's educational journey, please contact us.

IT IS SUCH A CHANGE FROM THE ANXIOUS, DEPRESSED PERSON HE WAS BEFORE HE MOVED TO MOORFIELD. THANK YOU SO MUCH TO ALL THE STAFF.”
